Impossibilities

Impossibilities is a loosely-structured series of work in which I imagine what the gallery or museum art experience could be like in a few years. The capabilities demonstrated in each piece could be made possible by new technologies like mixed reality HMDs and materials science. Each of these experiments were all created in 2020 when I was a hobbyist and only posting to social media. I was consistently and pleasantly surprised to the reactions they garnered, how many people thought these objects existed somewhere, able to be viewed. It made me consider what a strange time we live in, a reality between virtual and real, and served as a foundation to a lot of the art I created afterwards.

I created all of these simulations prior to quitting my job. They were purely recreational experiments, one-off ideas I would have during the day or while I was at work. For several years after college, I worked as a software developer and designer on augmented reality hardware, most recently the Hololens at Microsoft. Accordingly, I spent most of the day thinking about what type of changes mixed reality would trigger in a variety of industries, mostly related to enterprise or productivity. Impossibilities became a sort of outlet for me to think about more creative applications of mixed reality and other rapidly adopted technologies when I was outside of work.
